Q:How many extension methods are there?

A: There are about five methods in which you wear hair extensions. These are the general terms the industry uses to represent the process. There are many variations of these methods based on the individual who is performing the job ranging from braid, weave, Fusion, and Micro links, and Bonding.  And NOW, the latest seamless tape
. This is the method I wear in my own hair.

Q: What is Weaving?
(This is one method I use, the others are seamless skin weft, and Keratip Fusion
So pay attention here.....

A: A process in which you create "tracks" on the individuals head and sew the hair extensions on. The "extension row" is sewn onto a tiny cornrow I braid. This method has been around the longest, becoming popular in the early 1950's. This is the method I first learned in 2003.  The retightening of the row takes less than an hour. How pleased any person is with whatever method of extensions depends on three things: hair quality, education and the professional installing them. If you hear negative feedback from anyone who has worn extensions, I would bet it is because of one of those three reasons. Extensions are amazing!!

Q: What Is Seamless Skin Weft (aka Tape In)
A: I wear this method, and I frequently will use this method WITH the Keratip fusion method around the face. This process takes less than an hour to install, by way of a "sandwich" application. It is excellent for fullness and volume, adding highlights or low lights without chemically processing....oh yeah, and change your mind a couple months later without color correcting! This method lasts about 7-8 weeks and hair can be reused about three times before rebuying depending on how well you take care of it.

Q: What is Strand by Strand? (aka Individual Fusion)

A: A process in which the extension hair is attached directly to your own hair by heated glue sticks or a keratin glue. I use Keratin U Tip for this method. It is a little more time consuming, and I don't reuse hair. This method can last up to 4-5 months. It's important to know, the connection iron for this method is about 200 degrees. Your flat iron and curling irons are close to double that temp. So no, this is not "more damaging" because it is applied with heat.

Q: What is Micro links?

A: A process that is alot like the strand by strand method but instead of glue you use metal  plastic tubes to attach the hair.

Q: What is Bonding?

A: A bonding glue is brushed or applied onto the weft (track of hair) of the extension hair and then it is applied at the root of the individual's hair. This is a temporary method. Once the hair grows out over an inch from the scalp, you frequently need to purchase new hair your next service.

Q: What is "custom blended?

A: You/we can choose from an array of shades and tones to exactly match your desired colour. The pieces/hair can be two or three different colours to create dimension and maintain a "weaved highlighted" look.
There are 3 things that MUST be cohesive in extensions and if any one of the 3 is not on target, your extensions are a dead give away.
1. Exact texture match 2. Exact color match 3. Exact blended cut
(Keep it a secret!)

Q: Are Extension's Damaging?
(my favorite question)
A: The truth is, almost everything we do to our hair, is in fact damaging. We wash it with solvents, dry it, iron it, colour it, and on and on. The environment alone is damaging. That being said, isn't the best question: what is the least damaging? How can I get the look I want without wrecking my hair? Do we not look for the "least damaging" avenues and products to help us get just what we want.... we do. We are endlessly looking for products and systems that restructure, repair and correct the abuse we put it through...Hair Integrity, and having exactly what you want can be accomplished, but friend, that is a "whole-nother" conversation and requires consultation.
All methods of extensions can be damaging, yet do not have to be. Pick a really good extensionist, like you would any service professional, and you will have nothing but positive things to tell your friends about your extensions. Extensions have gotten a bit of a bad rap over the years, not because they are bad...but because some stylists jumped on the cash cow and produced  more of a mill than a quality service. Consult and scrutanize many different extensionists until you find one who cares as much about your hair (which reflects their talent) than you do...
